Speaker for the Dead

lanternSo, I’ve been reading Necropolis: London and Her Dead by Catherine Arnold, which is very enjoyable. She says that mourners wore black to hide themselves from the ghosts of the dead, which is awesome. And it gave me a story spark, hence, the new novella in progress Speaker for the Dead. No publisher for it as yet, but I’m enjoying writing something without pressure. The opening is below, and the illustration here is the work of Leah Piken Kolidas, and when the time comes to start arguing about covers, I would like this!

Speaker for the Dead

Hilla wore a bright crimson dress to her husband’s funeral.

She didn’t choose a grieving gown for she had no wish to hide from his shade, to be made invisible by black fabric. No. She wanted to be seen, desired nothing so much as that he should know she danced with every step.

The mourners held their breath, waiting to see what might happen.
