Mini-review: What Gets Left Behind

To celebrate FantasyCon in Brighton, here’s a review of Spectral’s newest chapbook, Mark West’s good old-fashioned scary What Gets Left Behind.

The blurb is as follows:

In 1981, Gaffney was terrorised by the Rainy Day Abductor.

Local girls went missing.

And two boys made a terrifying discovery.

Now one of them has come home, to try and lay the past to rest.

This is Spectral’s seventh chapbook and another winner. In a story with a slow burn, a decent man tries to do the right thing, and finds that no good deed goes unpunished. West’s pacing works well and his characterisation is deft. He makes the reader empathise, dislike, fear and wet her/his pants at just the right moment. This is old school horror done very well indeed.
