The Bonus Drive-by: Ann VanderMeer

Ann VanderMeer is an award-winning editor and publisher (Buzz City Press) – but then, who doesn’t know that? She’s also married to Jeff VanderMeer, the award-winning writer and editor. The world has them to thank for such tomes as Steampunk, Steampunk II: Steampunk Reloaded, The Kosher Guide to Imaginary Animals, The New Weird and The Thackery T Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric & Discredited Diseases. Ann is the second female editor of the legendary Weird Tales – which won a Hugo in 2009 for best Semiprozine. She’s also an awesome teacher and a very, very nice person, and here she answers some random questions.

1. What needs to be edited out of every story?
Each story is different, so there’s no one thing wrong in every single one (and most stories I buy need very little editing).

2. Being the editor of Weird Tales is …
… the most fantastic adventure ever!

3. The worst thing about being married to a writer is …
… paper cuts!  And not being able to eat at the dining room table (since he’s taken it over for his workplace).

The best thing is …
… never a dull moment! And being the first one to read his work.

4. I want to work with a writer when …
… I am blown away by their work and I can’t stop thinking about their fiction.

5. Donuts or danishes? I will also accept ponchkes …
How about bagels?  Nom nom…
