Brain and I had a conversation about this very matter the other week. I have not read the Game of Thrones series – this is not a reason to burn me at the stake, for I have ordered the books in order to paper over this gap in my knowledge – but we were talking about how GRRM kills off beloved characters … but you don’t hate him for it.
We figured it was because he writes characters who seem so much masters of their own fate that you don’t feel like they’re the victims of the writer-god. Their decisions and fates are their own and the result of their own choices.
Still, doesn’t mean I didn’t wail about Sean Bean’s fate …
