Down the Rabbit Hole: WEIRDFICTIONREVIEW.COM

Myrtle Von Damitz

I seem to have agreed to become the managing editor for Ann and Jeff VanderMeer’s new weirdfictionreview.com site, which is launching the end of this month. The site is being created by Luís Rodrigues and the awesome art of the Myrtle Von Damitz (see? See?) is featured as part of the design.

Initially it will be 101 Weird Writers, celebrating the launch of A & J’s latest anthology The Weird: A Compendium of Strange and Dark Stories. There will be an original comic strip on encountering the weird by Leah Thomas and all kinds of other cool stuff. Jeff’s pitching it as the “non-denominational central source for features on weird fiction, along with art, movies, and music”.

After the opening 101 Weird Writers feature this will be an ongoing space for info and discussion of The Weird in all of its permutations—which means you’ll be able to find features on Amos Tutuola, Daphne Du Maurier, Leonora Carrington, Julio Cortazar, and Shirley Jackson as readily as such staples as Kafka and Lovecraft. Old Weird, Weird, New Weird, or Next Weird; we will be covering it all. We will also delve into related areas, like the Gothic, Decadent-era fiction, and Surrealism. In addition to literature, we will also cover art, film, and music.

As yet, the site is NOT open to unsolicited submissions. When it is open, we will let you know. Until then, don’t ask me to accept an unsolicited submission.

As managing editor, I’m scheduling and posting, receiving the solicited submissions and answering the queries about the solicited submissions (as I will be doing when we open to unsolicited submissions). Things to consider when dealing with editors, of course, even during this initial solicited submissions phase: make sure to review the guidelines carefully. And depending on the time zone, I may well receive your email before I have my morning coffee, so thanks for the clarity and professionalism I know will imbue your emails. Keep in mind that, for me, coffee is a civilising influence.

That being said, I’m really looking forward to this project – it is made of awesome.
