Revisiting childhood

Last night I ordered one of my favourite books from childhood, Joan Aiken’s The Wolves of Willoughby Chase.

I read this when we lived out at Longreach and I was about nine … it was an incredible read for a kid living in the Outback, to read about snow and wolves and evil guardians and orphanages, etc.

It was a book from the public library there and I didn’t want to give it back. I may have hidden it under my mattress. My mother found it. She always did. The book went back.

At last, at the age of 45 I am getting my own copy 😀 . I tried to find the original cover that I remember, but couldn’t … but I did find one of the illustrations that’s been embedded in my memory. This book is one of the reasons I write.
