Angela Slatter and Lisa Hannett are tearing up trees in the Australian fantasy community. Both are much lauded both at home and abroad – Slatter’s latest achievement was to become the first-ever Australian winner of a British Fantasy Award – and from this collaboration, it’s easy to see why. Drawn from Norse mythology, it’s a ‘mosaic novel’ – a series of short stories that combine to form a larger tale – that follows generations of characters from the distant past to the present. Beautifully descriptive and brutal by turns, it’s exquisitely written.
